Our history seems to have begun when the other side of the world discovered us. Indigenous, Africans and colonizers led to an undefined mix, from which it is complicated to get a unifying model, as in the actuality we are none of those three.

Juan Jacobo Ospina Jaramillo/ Seinforma Correspondent

Bogotá.- At the moment these are just words on a piece of paper, they are no longer part of that world of my own. Not addressed to anyone in particular and still, a wide group of people will be in touch with them. But, what shall I say to this anonymous multitude in charge of reading them? What is there to tell? For this is a very special way of communication that just for few moments congregates various readers around the exact same topic. And given that nowadays nothing seems to gather us, I can look at it and say something about that, about whatever it assembles us, whatever belongs to us, about a collective feeling of identity.

The outlook may be presented like this: on the one hand, the (ideally) fundamental and implicit values: respect for the others, for the difference, we are all human beings and that is why each and every one of us must be appreciated in our individuality. On the other hand, the massive information technologies continue sending schemes of foreign life, born in very different circumstances from ours, hardly reachable and of doubtful appropriateness. Which besides, have an increasing coverage both within the geographic territory, and the one of the mind. Therefore our heads are flooded with unconnected figures, strange ones; air from other places covers our space and we demand to be respected in our individuality, limited by nature.

Nobody seems to be questioning about what is ours, about what it belongs to us. And it is that we do not know on what direction to look to find a way out. A collective feeling of identity could come from the past, but history made fun of our most fundamental roots and there is not an image in which we may find ourselves with our historical predecessors. In order not to be too specific, our history seems to have begun when the other side of the world discovered us. Indigenous, Africans and colonizers led to an undefined mix, from which it is complicated to get a unifying model, as in the actuality we are none of those three. So the consequence of so many possible mixed up historical legacies, is an inert history that remains in books but which gives a reason of this present: confused people, at war, of corruption and personal interests, depending on the foreign movement.

I do not find the way to build identity from history. What are we left with? The present. A collective feeling can not come elsewhere than from experience itself, from the way in which we may organise it and tell it. So here I am, putting forward these "thoughts and talks" that cross my mind, so that you take the chance and get inspired to write something, so that maybe, for the first time, we get to know ourselves and talk about each other, about what happens to us, what we care for and maybe, some day, we may recognize ourselves as independent people and begin to respect individualities. There is no doubt of the existence of the capacities and the ways of doing it, the potential is hardly perceptible in the way we behave on the different aspects of life. Sports, music, food, dancing, habits, accents, colours and regionalisms testify the aforementioned.

Anyway, a lot of harm is due to our belief that we are too different from the others, we do not find the space to see and love each other as equals. It looks as if we came from different ports, had different destinies, provoking a collapse. Maybe we can be together cooperating. The invitation is for you to look around and realise that, even though we all look very different (fact that does not appear in other places), we all speak the same language, we all have a heart, and we al laugh showing our teeth.
