Bogota. - The goal is to familiarize the Caribbean audience with their local cinema. At the Cuban Movie Festival celebrated in Kingston, Jamaica (2005) the idea of an “itinerant Caribbean cinema show” was created, the first version was launched on July 2006 and it was done simultaneously in all the Caribbean islands and it showed movies from Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, Santa Lucia, Dominica, San Vicente and The Grenadines, Granada, Guyana, Belize, Aruba, Curacao, Suriname, Martinique, Guadalupe, Haiti, Cuba, Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico.
The project is supported by the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinema Industry (ICAIC), the Jamaican Ministry of Culture, the UNESCO and by Rigoberto López Pego, well known Cuban filmmaker. It was done with great success in February / March of 2007 taking 28 films of Caribbean producers that were shown in 15 countries. The films were translated and subtitled but the ICAIC in all the languages needed: English, Spanish, French, and Creole.
Dedicated to childhood
“It’s in early childhood and teenage years where the imagination of a country, its identity and culture are defined, it’s an essential part of a nation” [i]. These were the words of Rigoberto López in the call opening (February 2008) when they announced that the second edition was going to be dedicated to boys, girls and teenagers of the region, the Cuban UNICEF office was included as sponsor.
“The infant audience is commercially filled by cultural products that promote violence, oppression, racial hate and sex, this is exactly the opposite of what children and young people need”[ii]. This is why this cultural effort wants to promote the autochthonous values of the Caribbean people because “The Caribbean with its diverse and unique culture has within the kids and the young people the most hopeful support for the future of each nation. This is why we want our cinema to be for our kids more than just a simple entertainment; it’s not only a formative need but also a substantial input for the spirituality of the Caribbean future men and women” said Rigoberto López.
According to the Director of the UNESCO in the Habana, Mr. Herman van Hooff, this should reach all the region sectors and strata and mainly to the kids and young people for being the most vulnerable groups. This is why the experiences of the second show will be an “invaluable reference for the action cultural projects for boys, girls and teenagers of different places and different socioeconomic groups” he stressed.
