London, On.- Beginning February 24th and running thru March 1st Canadians all across the country will observe “Freedom To Read Week”; an opportunity to celebrate Canadian’s right to read whatever material they wish. Sadly, however there are people in other countries who have been and currently are imprisoned merely for their writings and we as a concerned community gather together to give voice to those who can not speak.
? Members of the community will be reading short passages from banned books and the works of imprisoned, harassed and banned writers from around the world.
? Mr. Alvaro Gomez of Colombia will be our featured speaker. Mr. Gomez was forced to flee his native Colombia and now resides in Canada. As a crusading Columbian journalist, Mr. Gomez wrote numerous articles about the Colombian drug trade and government corruption. Besides, he survived to an armed attack attribuited to the national Police, and settled a civil lawsuit against the government in defense of his freedom of expression. This prompted the Colombian government to force him to exile.

From Prison to Freedom... just a Letter
Global Importune (G.I.) is nonprofit human rights
advocacy group that is dedicated to promoting
and defending the rights of imprisoned political
prisoners around the world.
It is an internet-based human rights organization that works for the promotion and respect of human rights worldwide. Using the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights as a guideline, G.I. works to protect and promote fundamental human rights of all people. G.I. mandate is to promote and raise the community's consciences about human rights.
Global Importune has officially been working on behalf of human rights since October 2000 and boasts a membership of more than 315 participants throughout the United States in Canada and as far away as Australia.GI sends its members three pre-written "letters of concern" on behalf of victims of human rights abuse each month. The recipients signs the pre-written letters and return them to GI in a self-addressed stamped envelope that GI provide free of charge. At the end of the month, GI bundles the many letters received from its members and mails them off to the targeted government officials.
