Managua.- Teenage pregnancy is a complex phenomenon, in which different factors are mixed, whether they are historical-cultural and/or socio-economic ones.
Human sexuality, and its practice, has been hyped and influenced by culture and media, on account of particular social practices that are been yielded to society, being therefore a strictly phenomenon related to social construction of gender of masculine and feminine identities; this process, is expressed in this life cycle stage, adolescence, in which the search for identity is a central axis of the growth and development process.
A research carried out by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) revealed that 2 million out of 13 million childbirths registered in Latin America correspond to teenagers between 15 and 19 years old, from which Nicaragua is the country with the highest pregnancy index in teenagers, revealing that more than 5 thousands newborns have mothers between the ages of 10 and 14 years and most of these young mothers comes from poor or disintegrated homes.
The statistics show a chilling and declining situation that Latin America is going through, but more alarming it is the circle that encloses a teenager pregnancy: the reasons that make it happen and the physical and psychological consequences.
Lack of affection, low self-esteem, familiar conflicts, poverty, sexual abuse, lack of education, among others, are the identified factors as the main agents which cause or rouse teenage pregnancy, considering that the deficient sexual education is one of the most important factors, explains psychologist Laura Guzmán in her book Embarazo y maternidad adolescente en Costa Rica (Teenage pregnancy and motherhood in Costa Rica).
Teenagers are in a psychological development state that makes them think that nothing will happen to them, adopting risky behaviours such as the irregular use of contraceptives, alcohol and drugs abuse, making themselves vulnerable to sexual predators. In several cases poverty is feminized and forces little girls to sell their bodies to be able to subsist, and in some cases they are even sold by their own parents.
Education is the key
Teenagers not only should assimilate the impact of pregnancy, but the grief of delay their dreams and wishes, facing new challenges, like seeing themselves forced to look for a job, therefore lowering their chances to complete their studies.
The fact that little girls change their rags dolls by a real doll, that by nature demands care and attentions that a teenager is still not prepared to provide, turns this situation into a vicious circle, since their children are raised in an atmosphere in which they might follow the example of their young parents and create a way of life that these children would inherit, and the same time would inherit to their grandsons and so on, creating a more depraved society, without values, and weaker social and economically speaking.
Multiple investigations have pointed out the direct connection between the academic level of a woman and the age of the first pregnancy. A higher academic level automatically raises the delay of the age of the first pregnancy, whereas a low schooling and dropping out quicken sexual intercourse and the risk of pregnancies in teenagers. But in our patriarchal societies a little girl is educated since her earlier childhood to satisfy a man needs to construct her life project around him.
A teenager in his/her quest for identity, needs a complete education, including subjects of sexual responsibility, moral values, self-esteem, fundamental rights, since to educate is not only teaching subjects, like Maths and Spanish, but providing a guide to these young people so they can face daily situations of life and in that way to be able to make correct decisions and identify the errors before making them.
Facing early pregnancy is actually an enormous challenge for all society, and each grown-up has a responsibility to assume, taking in account that this work must be continuous and systematic. We shouldn’t forget that teenagers grow and they become adults very quickly; however every year younger teens join to this group, facing new dilemmas in a world that adults have created, more and more complex.
